Hedera helix Goldchild is a selected variety of English ivy (Hedera helix), cultivated for its vibrant golden variegation, robust growth, and versatility in landscaping, garden design, and container planting. Its glossy leaves feature grey-green centres with bright yellow margins that mature to a soft creamy primrose tone, creating a striking “butterfly” pattern admired for its luminosity and year-round appeal. This evergreen ivy has a self-clinging habit, enabling it to scale walls, fences, trellises, and other vertical structures without the need for supports or wires.
Goldchild’s vigorous growth also makes it ideal as ground cover, helping suppress weeds and stabilise soil on slopes or under trees while maintaining a neat, structured appearance. The plant thrives in full sun, partial shade, or shaded conditions, making it adaptable to a wide range of garden environments. Its evergreen leaves remain vibrant throughout the winter months, providing colour when most other plants have faded.
Hedera helix Goldchild grows to a mature height of approximately 2–5 metres when climbing, with a spread of 1–2 metres as ground cover. Its trailing stems can cascade from hanging baskets or patio containers, producing a rich tapestry of golden-green leaves. Individual leaves measure roughly 5–10 cm across, displaying bright yellow margins that fade to creamy tones as they mature, while the central area remains grey-green, creating a dramatic, variegated effect. Supplied in a 3-litre nursery pot approximately 18–20 cm in height and 18 cm in diameter, the plant is well-established and ready for immediate planting. It is suitable for full sun, partial shade, or shaded conditions and thrives in most soil types. Its evergreen leaves provide continuous year-round colour, making it ideal for walls, fences, patios, balconies, and ground cover in both traditional and contemporary garden designs.
